Please Note: The main structure of the Sundar Narayan Mandir is currently undergoing important construction and restoration work. Because of this, the main temple building is temporarily closed to the public.
However, devotees can still get darshan. The original, sacred idols of Lord Sundar Narayan (Vishnu), Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Saraswati have been safely moved to a temporary shrine nearby.
Where to find the idol: You can visit the temporary shrine by walking down the small alley (gully) located just to the right side of the main temple building. The daily prayers and poojas are continuing as usual in this location.

What is the Sundar Narayan Mandir?
The Sundar Narayan Mandir is a very old and special Hindu temple in Nashik, Maharashtra. It sits on the high bank of the holy Godavari River. It is built for Lord Vishnu. Long ago, Lord Vishnu bathed in this exact spot to wash away a dark curse and get his beautiful look back.
The current temple, made of beautiful black stone, was built in 1756 by a Maratha leader named Sardar Chandrachud, after older enemies destroyed the first one. The temple is famous because it has three gods sitting together, and every year on March 21st, the morning sun shines right on their feet!
The Magical Story: A Curse on Lord Vishnu
A long, long time ago, there was a very strong and scary demon king named Jalandhara. Nobody could defeat him because his wife, Vrinda, was very good and faithful. Her goodness worked like a magic shield for him.
To save the world, Lord Vishnu had to break that magic shield. He used his powers to look exactly like Jalandhara. When Vrinda saw him, she thought he was her husband. Because she was tricked, the magic shield broke, and the gods finally defeated the demon.
When Vrinda found out she had been tricked by Lord Vishnu, she was very angry and sad. She threw a curse on him! This curse took away his bright, glowing beauty and turned his skin completely dark.
To fix this, Lord Vishnu came down to earth. He went to the holy Godavari River in Nashik and took a deep bath. The river’s magic water washed the dark curse right off! When he came out of the water, he was handsome and glowing again. From that day on, people called him “Sundar” (which means Beautiful) “Narayan” (Lord Vishnu).
Inside the Temple: Why Are There Three Gods?
Even though this is Lord Vishnu’s temple, he doesn’t sit alone. If you look inside, you will see three gods sitting together. Lord Vishnu (Sundar Narayan) is in the middle. On his right is Goddess Lakshmi (the Goddess of Money and Wealth), and on his left is Goddess Saraswati (the Goddess of Knowledge and Smartness).
Why three? Lord Vishnu’s job is to protect the whole world. To do this big job well, he needs both wealth (Lakshmi) and smartness (Saraswati). Having all three together shows that to keep the world happy and safe, you need both good ideas and the tools to make them happen.
The Magic Sunbeams of March 21st
The builders of this temple were super smart. They built the temple facing east in a very exact way.
Every single year, on a special day called March 21st, something amazing happens. When the sun rises in the morning, its very first rays of light shoot straight through the temple doors. The light travels all the way inside and shines right on the feet of Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Saraswati! Thousands of people come to watch this beautiful mix of nature and smart building.
Special Prayers and Good Vibes
Right outside the temple, there are stone steps that go down to the river. This special spot is called the Brahma Tirth.
People believe that taking a bath in this part of the river and praying to the Sun and Lord Vishnu is very good for you. Just like the river washed away Lord Vishnu’s curse, people say bathing here washes away bad luck, makes your mind sharp, and gives you a happy, peaceful heart.
A History of Falling Down and Rising Up
This temple has a brave history. The very first temple built here was destroyed a long time ago, in the year 1680, by angry kings who ruled back then.
But the people didn’t give up. Many years later, in 1756, a rich Maratha leader named Sardar Chandrachud decided to build it again. He spent a huge amount of money—10 Lakh Rupees, which was a fortune back then! He used it to build the big, beautiful black stone temple with lovely carvings and round domes that we still see today. It proves that even when things are broken, they can be built back even better.
